The NFL rules committee
took a serious look at the NFL overtime rules and considered giving each team a chance to have the ball in overtime. They have decided to leave the rule as it is rather change it.
If you don't think the Mannings have a lot of power in the league, then consider the fact that much of the talk about changing the rules reached their zenith when the Colts were eliminated from the playoffs by the San Diego Chargers.
All of the announcers and writers were crying about how the great Peyton Manning didn't get a chance to get on the football field during the overtime period. You would think we should have had a naional day of mourning because Manning and the Colts were eliminated from the playoffs.
The real reason the NFL backed off was because the NFLPA was going to make this a major fight because they felt a change in the ruling would result in more injuries, since players would be asked to play longer games. More injuries happen when players are tired.
I personally don't think they should change the overtime rules because I think the current rules are fair. Regardless of whether it's your offense or your defense, each team has a chance to win the game.
If your kicker does a good job along with your kick off coverage unit, you can have the opposing offense backed up inside their twenty yard line.
Put together a good defensive series with that and your offense ony needs to drive 30 or 40 yards for a game-winning field goal.
Back to Manning, the truth of the matter is that despite being a great regular season quarterback, Manning is mediocre in the playoffs.
He has some of the greatest numbers of any NFL quarterback in the regular season, but has been a disappointment in the playoffs, even in the Super Bowl year.
Manning has managed to make it to only two AFC Championship games in his 11 years in the NFL.
