Kudos to Reid. Screw up a position one season, solve it BIG time the next season. No punt returner in 2007…draft DeSean for 2008. No fullback in 2008…sign Weaver for 2009.
As a fan you only wish that Reid would catch these issues when they first present themselves.
The Weaver signing…outside of the length of the deal, I would think it would be difficult to find fault in today's signing. I commend Klecko for his efforts and willingness to learn, but FB was still a position that needed upgrading this off-season. The Weaver signing of course does that.
But may I suggest turning down the volume a bit on the excitement? The FB position wasn't the reason that the Eagles failed to reach the Super Bowl last season, as shown below.
In the Eagles final 8 games (including playoffs) when they needed 3 yards or fewer on third down the Eagles converted 71.4 percent of the opportunities (25 of 35).
The FB position next season also won't be the reason that the Eagles win a title. Surely the move helps but it needs to just be a piece. Andrews, Jones, Weaver…all pieces that keep the Eagles among the good teams, but not yet up there with the great teams.
There is still time as it's only March. My excitement started coming back today. Being ecstatic about 2009 will have to wait.
