Written By Chris Klinkner A lot of fans will surely disagree with this opinion. Some might even suggest that my tone is too "Dave Spadaro" in my support of the Eagles Front Office. But this fan absolutely loves the Eagles response to Sheldon
Brown going public with his trade demands and contract unhappiness.
The comments stress how unproductive Browns' stance is, how better players than Brown don't handle contract situations this way, and just how overall wrong Brown is in his demands. In short, the Eagles are royally ticked.
I do not recall the Eagles ever responding in such a harsh and direct manner to a player before.
The Eagles had a nice thing going with the Peters' signing as they headed into draft weekend. Now it is right back to the soap opera drama that has too often surrounded the Eagles. And it's unfortunate for the Eagles.
I see Brown's argument. He is entering the final of guaranteed money on his current contract. He will earn less than the teams' nickel CB.
BUT…when a player signs on the dotted line, they should honor the contract. Brown is one of my favorite players so the fan in me doesn't want to see him go, but this fan is so VERY tired of players complaining about signed contracts.
Players sign long term deals because they want the up front money and security (in case of injury). I can understand that. But with the long term deal a player gives up some of their negotiating power when they think they out perform the old deal or see other players (some with lesser talent) out earn them.
If a player is confident in their abilities then they should sign a 2 year deal. After 2 years the player holds all the " bargining chips" when negotiating a new deal.
It's called reality people…you can't have the best of both worlds. Security and less dollars in the later years of a contract or take a gamble and go short term with big money after 2-3 years.
Unfortunately this is a losing situation for all involved.
This is yet another PR nightmare for the Eagles when the team across the street (Phillies) are doing everything gold standard in the PR department. The Eagles have no one to replace Browns' productivity on the field or leadership off the field. Brown is unhappy and has be singled out as being stupid and selfish.
Eagles' drama is back!
