The Eagles Get An “A” From Me

I was thrilled by the Eagles draft.

The move to get Jason Peters would have given them a good mark by itself.  Add to that another electrifying playmaker like Jeremy Maclin. Then cap it off with a guy who could be the best back in the draft, LeSean McCoy and that's great.

My evaluation the day after the draft is overrated.  Other than Peters, we really don't know if any of these guys can play.  We know some of them can run and we know their size but that doesn 't mean anything.

Back to the players.  I thought Maclin was the best playmaker in this draft.  He might not be the best receiver when it comes to running routes, but he's the best playmaker.

His combination of size and speed, along with his ability to make tackler miss and change of direction was the best that I saw.

When you put DeSean Jackson, Kevin Curtis and Maclin on the field at the same time, then add Brian Westbrook or McCoy to the equation, it will stress a defense.  It's speed and it's the ability to make tacklers miss.

Andy Reid has a more weapons to aim at the opposing defense.

Would I have liked to see them get a run blocking tight end?  Yes but I knew it might be difficult getting everything but they got a lot.

McCoy could be the best back in the draft.  If you look at his tapes, he run the ball as well or better than any one.  He didn't test well though.

He's not going to make those long 60, 70, 80 yard runs but he's got the quickness and the vision you see in Westbrook to make the five, six,  seven and ten yard runs consistently.

He's got the feel for running with the football, finding the seam in the defense, making people miss, and running through tackles which you can't teach.

The Eagles next move was another good one.  They put together a couple of those fifth round picks and picked up Ellis Hobbs, who can play right now.  We don't have to wonder whether he can play or not, he coudl line up this weekend.

Hobbs isn't a great corner but I think I would put him ahead of Joselio Hanson and a half of a step behind Sheldon Brown.  You know this move was because of Brown's unhappiness with his contract.

I don't know about Cornelius Ingram because he didn't play last year.  I saw tape of him and read about him.  He's an outstanding athelete in the process of recovering from injury.

The question regarding him and the other Eagles tight ends is are they willing to commit to block.

The rest of the draft are all long shots.  They'll be trying out for a team which doesn't have a lot of holes.
