Reid: Record-Breaking Offer To Dawk

Andy Reid said the Eagles offer to Brian Dawkins was record breaking for a player his age and position.

Big Red told WIP's Howard Eskin that the offer which the Eagles presented to Dawkins would have made him the highest paid player at his age and at his position in the history of the league.

I'm sure what Reid is saying is true but there haven't been many 35 year old safeties in the history of the league, so that's nothing to get too excited about.

I can understand why they let Dawkins walk.

Reid said he was very much involved in the Dawkins negotiations and talked to the Eagles great throughout the process.

Reid said he didn't feel it was in the team's best interest to guarantee the safety over $7 million dollars in the next two years like the Denver Broncos did.

"They're in a different place than we are.  Maybe ten years ago we were in the posiition where they are when we were rebuilding our defense."

As for the Eagles safety situation going forward, Reid thinks Quintin Demps will be up for the job because of his ballhawking abilities.  Demps is a tremendous athlete with tremendous speed and a nose for the football.

The youngster led college football in interceptions during his senior year.

Of course if he's not up to it, they'll go with veterans Sean Jones or Rashad Baker.

Reid took some time to talk about Asante Samuel and how many interceptions he dropped last year.  The Big Fella says they've got to come down with those picks this time around.

As for Reid's talk about the Dawkins situation, this seems like they're trying to clean up after the ugly public relations job which Joe Banner did.  Banner can negotiate but as a PR guy, he's a disaster.

This was the most open interview I've ever heard Reid do.
