Uh oh!¬† Hakeem Nicks finally dropped a pass yesterday!¬† That was the lead in the NY Daily News’ Ralph Vacchiano’s minicamp report.
Here is the rest of Vacchiano’s as yesterday’s Giants minicamp wrapped up for the day (the major highlight for me was the fact that the Giants have a player named Micah):
• Nicks actually looked pretty good again today, despite the drop. One thing I’ve noticed is that he’s really abused cornerback Stoney Woodson (seventh round) this camp. Every time Nicks runs deep on Woodson, the receiver seems to beat him by about five yards.
• One day after leaving practice with cramps, TE Travis Beckum (third round) was back at practice.
• QB Andre’ Woodson was praised this morning by Tom Coughlin for “taking charge of drills,” but he’s still looked a little shaky at times. He threw a terrible pass into triple (and possibly quadruple) coverage trying to find Beckum. It was not surprisingly picked off by tryout safety Derek Pegues.
• Coughlin listed four other players who have stood out to him so far in rookie mini-camp: DE Maurice Evans (a UDFA from Penn State), S Sha’reff Rashad (a UDFA from Central Florida), TE Cody Boyd (first-year pro tryout from Washington State), and “the kid from Syracuse” (also known as tryout LB Kelvin Smith).
• How not to make a team: During individual drills, fullback E.J. Barthel (a tryout from UMass who joined camp today) ran straight into running backs coach Jerald Ingram in the open field.
• WR Ramses Barden had an ugly, open-field fumble after a catch in team drills. The ball was actually stripped away by Stoney Woodson.
• WR Micah Rucker, a holdover from the practice squad, did not participate this morning due to a pulled left hamstring.
• Nicks, RB Andre Brown, and Stoney Woodson all took turns on kick returns. So did CB Bruce Johnson (a UDFA from Miami), RB Andre Hall (a tryout from South Florida) and WR Shaun Bodiford (a fourth-year pro tryout from Portland State).
• If a coach is paying attention to you in rookie camp, it’s a good sign since they’re not likely to even bother yelling at players with no shot at all. So consider it good that Jim Herrmann, the new LBs coach, seemed to be talking a lot to Kenny Ingram, the 6-5, 239-pound Florida State safety who signed a UDFA contract and is converting to linebacker. His size and coverage ability gives him a lot of potential, and he could be a guy to watch this summer for a possible practice squad spot.
