Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson is going to play new Eagles safety Sean Jones at only the strong safety position and not the free safety spot.
If you were to get a good look at Jones and his size, as well as the way he moves, you could see that he's a strong safety and not a free safety.
He seemed to be as big or bigger than Eagles linebacker Omar Gaither. Jones also moves like a strong safety. he belongs up by the line of scrimmage not in the defensive backfield getting caught one on one with a wide out.
I think he has a nose for the football but covering wide receivers or speedy tight end isn't his strength.
Quintin Mikell is fast enought to play the free safety or the strong safety. I think the Birds would rather he play the strong safety spot so they can get Quintin Demps and his speed on the field at the free safety positon.
The reason they feel this way is because of the fact that NFL games are now won and lost in the passing game. Mikell and Demps at the starting safety position gives the Birds more speed on the field.
Both of them would have no problem coming up to support the run defense, but more importantly both of them are fast enough to cover the deep areas and not give up the big play.
Yet and still we may find out that Demps can't handle the starting spot. If that's the case, then Mikell will move to free safety and Jones will take over at strong safety.
Until then, Sean Jones will be an "Oak Ridge Boy". i.e. Most the benches in the league used to be made of Oak.
