Eagles back up quarterback Kevin Kolb was on 610-WIP this afternoon with Howard Eskin.
He talked about the tough situation he finds himself in sitting on the bench behind Donovan McNabb.
Kolb says he wants to play and he wants to play now, but he knows that right now he'll just have to sit and stay ready to go if he is needed.
Kolb said he wants to get on the field because that the way he can really start learning. At the same time, Kolb says he wants the team to do well because the team comes first.
I've heard Kolb mention Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers, as an example of a young quarterback who had to wait a long time behind an established quarterback, before he got his chance to play.
The young quarterback went back through the Baltimore game and said he has nobody to blame but himself for blowing that opportunity.
Publicly the Eagles say they like him but they wouldn't say anything different publicly even if they weren't very high on him.
I think he's got a good compact and accurate throwing motion but I don't like some of the bad interceptions he throws in practice. It's regarded as no big deal because he's always running the scout team but he's been doing it for three years now.
The other weakness I've noticed with Kolb is that he always has problems against the blitz. If his decision-making is hurried, he makes mistakes.
Yes it could get better with time, but when will he ever get the time.
The bottomline for Kolb, especially right now will be the way McNabb plays. If he has a great season, he'll sign a contract extension and Kolb will likely be traded to somebody who is willing to give the Eagles at least a second rounder.
Remember that Brett Favre was a high pick who was traded. Aaron Rodgers who was drafted to replace Favre had to sit and wait a long time.
Houston's Matt Schaub sat for a long time in Atlanta before being traded. Matt Cassell was traded to the Chiefs this year after doing a nice job in New England..
Tommy Maddox was drafted to replace John Elway but he never did.
The stories of other quarterbacks shows you a number of things.
If teams think a quarterback can play, he will always have a high value.
Sometimes getting traded can be the best thing to happen to a quarterback.
Sometimes the trade does nothing but expose the fact that the quarterback can't play.
