Greg Ellis on the block in Dallas?

I saw a rumor on the internet recently (which means it must be true) that the Cowboys are shopping outside LB Greg Ellis.  Give me a second, this does sort of relate to the Eagles.

The Cowboys need to lock up his counterpart and full-time stud DeMarcus Ware to a big-money deal.  Trading Ellis would save them $5 million and cutting him would save them $4.15 million.

Here's how it relates to the Eagles. The Cowboys feel like they can trade Ellis because they feel like 2007 first-round pick Anthony Spencer is ready to take over.  Sure, Spencer missed four games last year due to knee and hamstring issues as a part-time player and moving Ellis would make them thin at that position.  But Spencer makes them better against the run even if he isn't the pass rusher that Ellis is right now.  He certainly could develop in that area to become a nice player.

But if Spencer can come in and start and be productive, it will be the first time we get some light shed on that 2007 draft-day trade the Eagles made with Dallas.  But he'll have to be pretty good because so far the Eagles have gotten the better of that deal, landing Kevin Kolb and Stewart Bradley.  Bradley is the best of the three right now, but Spencer hasn't really gotten a shot to be the guy on the other side of Ware yet.  Kevin Kolb is a complete unknown.

So looking back, so far the Eagles are fine there.  I know there was a lot of complaining on WIP after that deal was made because no one in the Delaware Valley wants to help the Cowboys.   But we'll know more if the Cowboys move Ellis and give Spencer his chance to shine.
