Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reports that, according to two sources, the NFL has opened a tampering investigation in regards to the Redskins acquisition of Albert Haynesworth.
The Titans complained previously about the Redskins contacting Haynesworth and his agent prior to the start of free agency on February 27th. NFL teams are not allowed to talk to players or agents of players on other teams who are under contract.
You know the Redskins tampered, but so what? They need to change this rule because everyone does it. No big money deal like the $41 million guaranteed to Haynesworth gets done overnight and everyone knows it.
Anytime there are big money deals done on the first day of free agency, you know there must have been tampering.
If it’s found that the Redskins tampered with Haynesworth, they will most likely lose a draft pick. The Niners lost a fifth-round pick a couple years ago when it was found that they tampered with Chicago Bears LB Lance Briggs while they were thinking of trading for him.
Punishing the Redskins in this manner wouldn’t mean anything to them since Dan Snyder treats the draft like an off-season nuisance rather than a weekend in which to build your team.
What I don’t like about the tampering charges is that it’s always made to sound like it’s not fair to the team that previously held the player’s rights. In this case it would be the Titans.
I happen to think it does more damage to the teams that may have wanted to make an offer, but never got a chance to because they played by the rules and waited while another team secretly had a deal in place.
Something needs to change with regards to this rule. Tampering is rampant, but rarely policed.
