Jones Vs. Demps Will Be A Good One

I talked to Sean Jones after practice and he's confident he can win a starting safety job here in Philly.

Quintin Demps who is manning the starting safety position right now opposite Quintin Mikell, is as confident as any player you'll ever meet about keeping that starting job.

Jones told me he dropped 10 pounds recently, in order to be quick enough to play the deep half. That was smart of him to do that because I thought he was too big to play the deep half when I saw him at the mini camp right after the draft.

The deep half is the area the safeties have to cover on cover two zones where they split the field deep.

They've got to be fast enough to get to the deep sideline and down the middle when a ball is thrown.

Jones made some nice breaks on the ball this morning.  He picked off a deflected pass and got his hands on two other passes.  He looks quicker than I thought he was.

The 2nd year safety Demps is not to be outdone.  He also made some a nice break and leap for a pass.  It would have been a spectacular play but he couldn't hold onto the throw.

I said before that I thought Demps had the advantage here in this battle for the starting job.  I'm not so sure.

I still like Demps' athleticism and playmaking ability on the football in the air, but Jones impresses me more and more every time I check him out.

I think this battle between Demps and Jones is going to be the best competition for a starting job in the upcoming training camp.
