The most important thing which will happen at the Eagles training camp this summer will be the work done on the offensive line.
The Birds have some individuals who by themselves will be able to block their man one on one, but an offensive line has to be on the same page. These guys have got to get used to playing next to each other.
It's not about playing well as an individual, it's about playing well as a unit.
The reason for this is simple. Many times during a game or before a play, the offensive linemen don't have time to say, "you've got him and I have the other guy". Too many times, the defensive guys will move a split-second before the ball is snapped.
Players have to anticipate which player the guy next to them is going to block, so they can be on the same page. This takes time and it's probably the thing that concerns me most about this offensive side of the ball.
A couple of mix ups can get somebody hurt and that somebody could be Donovan McNabb.
The guys kid around about offensive line coach Juan Castillo and the fact that he tries to coach his offensive linemen every second of every day. He's going to do a lot of coaching this summer.
The most important new guy from a communication standpoint is guard Stacy Andrews. Stacy is going to have to get line calls from center Jamaal Jackson and pass them outside to his brother Shawn.
Jackson is the brain of this group, he decides how they're going to block the particular front their facing and everybody has to be on the same page.
If the noise gets so loud that one of the guys doens't get the call, he has to figure out what the call would against the front he's looking at. During these times, familiarity means everything.
The more experience two offensive linemen have playing next to each other, the easier it is to communicate.
Most of the time left tackle Jason Peters is going to be matched up one-on-one with the right defensive end, so he's not going to have to make sure he passes a blocking call outside to the tight end.
