There’s been a lot of talk about the new money that has been given to Donovan McNabb. The truth of the matter is that they can easily release McNabb in May of next year,
if they don’t like the job he does in 2009.
Some have said he didn’t deserve it and the Eagles shouldn’t have given it to him. Honestly the Eagles did a god job of covering their butts.
Yes the Eagles will sacrifice $3.5 million dollars, which is guaranteed to McNabb next year, if they release him in May, but they won’t have to give him the $6.2 million dollar bonus, if he doesn’t have a great year in 2009.
In truth he’s got a one-year deal and part of his bonus is tied to him staying healthy and playing every game.
He will receive $31,250 for each game he plays. It makes up a $500, 000 year bonus. If he doesn’t stay healthy he doesn’t get the bonus.
Brian Dawkins was insulted by this clause in his contract and even accused the Eagles of asking for money back if he got hurt and saw that money deducted from his pay.
The bottom line is that McNabb had better have a big year in 2009 or he’s going to be let go by the Eagles prior to May of 2010. It’s that simple.
