Eagles Formula For Winning Part 3

Andy Reid may have had a lot of information in those notebooks which he showed Jeffrey Lurie and Joe Banner, but he didn't have formula for winning a Super Bowl in them.

Of course I'm talking about the meeting which Reid had with Lurie and Banner that convinced them that he was the guy who would make the Eagles a Super Bowl Championship team.

Yes he had a formula for being consistently in the playoffs but it wasn't a formula for winning a Super Bowl championship.

First of all, most teams are either offense-oriented or defense-oriented.  That means they win by either outscoring you or they win by stopping your offense, forcing turnovers and controlling the ball.

A defense-oriented team usually has more talent on defense than it does on offense. The Steelers and the Giants are defense-oriented teams.

A offense-oriented team is usually vice-versa.  The Arizona Cardinals and the New England Patriots are currently offense-oriented teams.

A defense-oriented team runs the ball, tries to eat up the clock and wear your defense down.  They rely on their defense to force turnovers, outplay the other team's offense in order to win.

The offense would focus on controlling the ball and opt to not turn the ball over rather than take a lot of chances trying to outscore the other team.  Controlling the game with ball possession points toward a running game.

An offense-oriented team like the "Greatest Show on Turf" St. Louis Rams had four All-Pros at their six skill positions and they tried to outscore teams.

The Patriots have a great quarterback and great receivers.  The same is true of the Cardinals.

The current Steelers and Giants teams are defense-oriented teams which primarily run the ball on offense, eat up the clock, and force turnovers on defense.  Their quarterbacks don't throw the ball more than 20 to 25 times a game.

You can clearly see what their formula is for winning a championship.

You can't say the same about the Eagles for this last decade.  In one way, they act like an offense-oriented team that wants to outscore everybody by throwing the ball a lot.

Then on the other hand, if you look at their talent, they look like a defense-oriented team.

If you're going to that throws the ball over 30 times a game then you've got to have outstanding talent at the wide receiver position if you want a chance at winning a Super Championship.

In the past, they couldn't outscore a good team in a championship game because they lacked the talent at the skill positions, namely wide receiver.

The Eagles have sent one wide receiver to the Pro Bowl and his name was Terrell Owens.  They didn't stress having great wide receivers, they had great defensive backs.

All I can conclude is that the Birds haven't had a logical formula for winning a championship.

Their game plan was offense-oriented, but their roster was defense-oriented.

That's the main reason we sit here still without a Lombardi trophy.

I do like the fact that it seems that finally Andy Reid the general manager went out and drafted for Andy Reid the head coach.

He selected three rookies, Jeremy Maclin, LeSean McCoy and Cornelius Ingram, who can develop into being outstanding weapons for Andy Reid the head coach who likes to throw the ball all the time.
