I think former Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Steve McNair was going through a mid-life crisis. I've seen many former teammates including myself, go through major lifestyle changes after retiring.
I have hundreds of former teammates who just walked away from their families. Some of them got involved in criminal activities, namely selling drugs and went away to prison.
Players are used to being "the man" with big money in their pockets and everybody looking up to them.
The divorce rate in the NFL is something like 70% for players after they retire. The NFL Players Association have started trying to address it, but I've seen a lot of players who seem lost after they finish playing.
I hear all these people acting like they can't understand what was happening with Steve McNair when he was running around with his 20 year old girlfriend. Please we all know about part of what was happening.
He probably liked jumping in the sack with her and thought being involved with the youngster was reviving him. Little did he know the immeasurable damage that was awaiting him, his wife and his four boys.
I'm sure his young boys looked up to their dad as a hero, now for the rest of their lives, they'll hear people talking about him in a derogatory way.
He was tripping but we don't need people acting like this doesn't happen a regular basis in our country. This didn't start with Steve McNair, but it devastates families.
It's also easy to understand that the attraction of that booty clouded his mind and stopped him from getting away from this disturbed young lady.
There's no question as far as I'm concerned that McNair was going through a "mid-life crisis". This doesn't make him innocent of what he did but it does make it easier to understand.
After nearly two decades of focusing on football while playing youth football, high school football, college football and Pro football, he had to start his life over.
He was no longer NFL quarterback Steve McNair. Her was now a washed up 36 year old guy, who was starting to doubt himself and wonder what was ahead for him.
Here's how Wikipedia describes tje term Mid-Life crisis.
"Mid-life crisis is a term coined in 1965 by Elliott Jaques and used in Western societies to describe a period of dramatic self-doubt that is felt by some individuals in the "middle years" of life, as a result of sensing the passing of youth and the imminence of old age.
Sometimes, transitions experienced in these years, such as aging in general, extramarital affairs, menopause, the death of parents, or children leaving home, can trigger such a crisis. The result may be a desire to make significant changes in core aspects of day to day life or situation, such as in career, marriage, or romantic relationships."
After listening to everybody talk about him, it's clear that McNair changed his lifestyle after retiring. he focused on football and his family prior to this last year.
He just lost his way for a while and it ended up costing him his life. It's too bad he didn't have somebody close to him get in his face and challenge him about his decisions.
