Werth Deserves All-Star Nod

I think Jayson Werth deserved to be chosen. He's had a solid first half of the season both offensively and defensively.  He's improved in both areas during the time he has been with the Phils.

Werth was named to replace Mets centerfielder Carlos Beltran who is injured.

You can't ignore the fact that Werth has been tearing the cover off the ball, recently.  He has hit 12 of his 20 home runs since June 13.

So far this season he is hitting .268 with 20 home runs and 56 RBI's.  Those stats aren't bad at all for a little over half a season.

It hasn't hurt that his manager is the skipper for the National League All-Stars.

In what might not be a conincidence, the last time three outfielders from the same team were chosen to play in the All-Star game, the manager of that team was Charlie Manuel.  It happened in Cleveland in 1995 when Manny Ramirez, Kenny Lofton and Albert Belle were all selected to play in the game.

Maybe ol' Charlie really knows quite a bit about hitting.

He could have selected an additional player at any position but he felt that another outfielder was needed.

"I was looking at run production and defense and steals, and I felt another outfielder was very important," Manuel said. "Werth's very good in the outfield. He's got a great arm. He can run. He can steal a base. He can hit the ball out of the ball park to any part of the field, and he'll take a walk."
