There's an article on Philly.com titled, Inside the Phillies: "Logging first half of Phils' season about the first half of the Phllies season".
It lays out the guys who are having great seasons, the guys who are having good seasons, and the guys who are having poor seasons.
The basic highs and lows of the Phillies first half.
The guy that is signaled out for having the worst season is Ryan Howard. Yes, Ryan Howard. They don't even mention Jimmy Rollins who has struggled almost the entire first half of the season.
Rollins is hitting .228 with only 26 walks after 346 at bats which computes to a .285 On Base Percentage. It seems like he's coming out of his funk but he has played much lower from his career numbers than Howard.
Did a I mention that Rollins is the lead off man with a .285 On Base Percentage.
If he wants to give J. Roll a pass, then he could go after Cole Hamels who has a 4.87 ERA this year, while his career ERA is 3.65. Cole is only 5-5 on the season.
Remember also that Hamels is supposed to be the ace of the staff.
Of course he could have gone after closer Brad Lidge. I know he has been banged up but there's no question that he has underperformed.
Howard hasn't had his best first half of the season but you can't really go after him for what he's been doing. After all the guy is tied for the home run lead on the team with Raul Ibanez with 22. He's got 66 RBI's and is hitting .258 with an On Base Percentage of .342. His slugging percentage is .532.
The dude has improved dramatically at first base.
Again I'm not saying he couldn't play better but when you look at the guy who has underperformed in the first half of the season, you don't single out Ryan Howard.
