Around The NFL – Wed. 7/14/09

Favre said he'll make his mind up by the July 30th.  the Chiefs empty the bank for young quarterback Matt Cassel.  The Ravens give big bucks to Terrell Suggs in long-term deal.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Brett Favre will let the Vikings know by July the 30 whether he's coming back to play football or not.

"Favre said in an interview with the Associated Press on Wednesday that his right arm felt "pretty good" after a workout in Mississippi, but that he’s not ready to commit to playing for the Vikings because he wants to make sure he can be effective for an entire season.

Favre said he will give the Vikings an answer before the start of training camp. The Vikings deadline for reporting to Mankato is July 30 with the first practice scheduled for the following day."

Think about it.  Matt Cassel couldn't get off the bench while Matt Leinart and Vince Young were All-Americans and sure fire stars to be in the NFL.  Now Cassel is starting and getting a record setting contract while the other two are stuck on the bench.

Still, I know Cassel had a great year in 2008 for the Patriots but I can't see breaking the bank for him at the level the Chiefs did.  KansasCity.com reports the Chiefs giving him a phenomenal contract of the youngster.

"The deal reportedly will keep Cassel in Kansas City through the 2014 season and is worth up to $63 million, including $28 million guaranteed."

Wisely the Baltimore Ravens inked defensive end Terrell Suggs to a long-term deal.   According to the Baltimore Sun he got a record amount of guaranteed money for a defensive end.

"A three-time Pro Bowl linebacker, Suggs will receive $33 million in bonuses (a $10.1 million signing bonus and a $23 million option bonus due in March), which ranks second only to Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, who earned $34 million in bonuses. Suggs' total is believed to be the most ever for a defensive player."
