If this was a professional wrestling match the position battle for the 2nd receiver spot would be a “Battle Royal” pitting Kevin Curtis vs. Reggie Brown vs. Hank Baskett vs. Jeremy Maclin.
There will probably six receivers on the Eagles regular season roster so there definitely will be some battles within this unit at training camp. No matter who are the receivers the Eagles must improve upon their 2008 regular season receiver touchdown total of 11 TDs and only one touchdown reception in the playoffs.
Every receiving core in the NFL has the standard X, Y, and Z positions. Within the Eagles team we already know that emerging 2nd year receiver DeSean Jackson (1st Team NFL All-Rookie, 62 rec, 912 receiving yards and 2 TDs) is the “X” as the go-to guy. And tough over the middle receiver Jason Avant is the “Y” as the team’s best slot receiver — excels on 3rd downs and in the redzone (32 rec, 377 yds, and 3 TDs). So the big question going into training camp is “ Who is the “Z” receiver?”
Right now the odds on favorite is former 1,000 yard receiver Kevin Curtis, but the former Rams standout has struggled with a sport hernia that required another surgery this offseason. Curtis (33 rec, 390 yards, and 2 TDs) expects to be recovered in time for Training Camp at Lehigh University, but when I recently attended mini-camp you could sense that the team liked what they saw in 2009 first round pick Jeremy Maclin.
The mercurial former Missouri star is lightning fast and as long as he learns his playbook, Maclin should be able to contribute more than just on special teams as a returner in his first year. The key with Maclin’s development is whether he can make the transition from a wide-open spread option offense to a disciplined professional West Coast system. Maclin along with fellow rookie RB LeSean McCoy spent some quality time with quarterback Donovan McNabb at his passing camp in Arizona earlier this summer, so he should hit the ground running at training camp.
Baskett is a nice complimentary guy especially in the redzone plus he plays well on special teams, so I think he is also a strong candidate to make the team. However fifth-year holdover Reggie Brown finally seems to be interested in football for the first time in awhile – 18 rec, 252 yards, and 1 TD while dressing in only 10 games in 2008. After a solid set of mini-camps and OTAs, the former 2005 2nd round pick from Georgia is making a strong push to make the team. But this training camp will be a make or break one for Brown and everyone will know by the 3rd preseason game if he is part of the Birds regular season plans or not.
You can also throw former Cowboys receiver and “Wes Welker” wannabe Danny Amendola, 2008 Practice Squad player Shaheer McBride, and 2009 6th round pick Brandon Gibson into the mix of the players trying to claim former Eagles receiver Greg Lewis’ last receiver roster spot.
Prediction: Curtis recovers to claim the 2nd receiver spot opposite Jackson; Maclin backs up both Jackson and Curtis plus contributes in the return game and trick plays (reverses); Baskett, Brown, Avant, Gibson (Practice Squad), and Amendola (Practice Squad) make the team.
