McCoy Has An Abundance of Mentors

Eagles rookie running back LeSean McCoy has been talking to former star ball carrier and fellow Harrisburg, PA native Ricky Watters.  The former Pro Bowler stressed McCoy doing whatever was necessary to learn the offense.

McCoy talked to him about the importance of the mental part of the game.  Ricky was one of the best running backs to ever play in the west coast offense.  He had tremendous toughness and great hands.

Watters was bigger than McCoy, but the former Pitt Panther may be a little quicker than Ricky was.

The young running back also talked about rooming right next to Brian Westbrook. He'll be able to ask Westbrook all kinds of questions.

Right now all BWest is doing is rehabbing his ankle and knee.

McCoy likes having people around whom he can ask questions to and get honest knowledgeable answers. You don't get much better than Westbrook and Watters when it comes to great backs who played in the west coast offense.

I thought McCoy did a good job out there this morning and it seems like he has a better grasp of the offense now as compared to where he was during the OTA's.

He caught a pass on a nice out and up route which is run when they get the halfback singled up on a linebacker.  The quality running backs like Westbrook can beat linebackers all day long.

I love the way he takes his time on his cuts and when he's running screens.  He doesn't rush through his assignments the way many other inexperienced running backs do.

I used to love to play against rookies because they go through their fakes so fast, you didn't have enough time to bite on any of them.

LeSean takes his time and lets the play develop.  I think impatience is one of the biggest mistakes made by rookie players.

He was breathing heavy out there and he was soaked from all the perspiration.  McCoy is getting a lot of work because Westbrook is out and the veterans won't come in until Wednesday.

This kid is smart because he was pacing himself when he could as the practice wore on.

LeSean said that years ago he had come out to an Eagles training camp practice and got Donovan's autograph.  McNabb joked about it saying, "he wasn't as old and Brett Favre".
