I was thinking of the Birds putting Omar Gaither in the middle to replace Stewart Bradley but today Joe Mays was the guy lining up in that middle linebacker position.
Gaither thinks he should be the guy. He said playing the weak linebacker position is like riding in a car, whereas playing the middle linebacker position is like driving the car.
The former Tennessee Vol says he prefers driving to riding. I think it's going to be difficult for Mays to hold him off because of Gaither's experience.
He has started for a couple of years on the pro level while Mays only played some special teams for a couple of games last year.
Mays said he knew Bradley was done for the season before he took the field this afternoon and he also said he was a bit nervous.
He reminds me of former Carolina Panthers linebacker Sam Mills. He's short for a middle backer, standing only 5'11" six-foot. He's muscular from head to toe with tremendous explosion from his lower body.
This young man will hit anything that moves, but can he lead this defense? Can he get them lined up in the right front and coverage?
Does he understand the defense well enough to know how exactly it's supposed to function.
