I don't agree with the Eagles decision not to offer two draft picks for former Eagles and now New England Patriot defensive end Derrick Burgess. I think the Birds needed Burgess desperately.
The Eagles haven't had a consistent pass rush off the team's left and right side since Burgess gave them two sacks in the NFC Championship game from the right defensive end position and Jevon Kearse pressured Michael Vick from the left side.
If they can't get consistent pressure from their front four, they're going to be forced to blitz. New defensive coordinator Sean McDermott isn't experienced at designing and calling bltizes. If he gets caught in the wrong blitz, the defense is going to give up big plays.
Remember how that last year's Super Bowl wasn't clinched until LaMarr Woodley knocked the ball out of Kurt Warner's hand as he was attempting to throw. The Steelers could pressure the passer with James Harrison and Woodley without having to blitz.
The threat of Burgess coming off the left side would take the double teams off of Trent Cole. Teams are able to double Cole and single block the left defensive end, which then forces them to bltiz.
You can't rely on the bltiz in playoff games against experience quarterbacks with great receivers.
Knowing that how can anybody rely on young defensive end Victor Abiamiri when he can't stay healthy?
They guy has been hurt every year he's been here and he hasn't practice one single day in this training camp.
The other left defensive end Juqua Parker isn't big enough and strong enough to battle guys who outweigh him by 50 to 100 pounds all season long, then rush the passer effectively at the end of the season.
There's no way Burgess should be more valuable to the Patriots than the Eagles. They've already won three Super Bowl championships. We haven't won any.
One of the formula's for winning a Super Bowl is having two outstanding pass rushers, which allows you to pressure the quarterback without blitzing and leaving yourself open to big plays.
