Fokou Challenging Mays For MLB Job

In one way it's a good thing in another way it's a bad thing.  According to Reuben Frank of PhillyBurbs.com, 7th round rookie linebacker Moise Fokou is challenging the starting middle linebacker spot now held by Joe Mays.

Understand that Fokou has never played middle linebacker before but he's been kicking butt and taking names as long as he's been in camp.

The kid makes me think of the way you're supposed to play the linebacker position, which means you play it with an attitude.  Offensive players aren't supposed to get along with linebackers and nobody on the Eagles offense has been able to get along with Fokou, since training camp started.

I thought it was a coincidence the first few times I saw him in the middle of a dust up, but when it happened again and again, I realized that Fokou didn't have a problem getting into a scrape with a running back, tight end, offensive lineman or anybody else.

This young man brings the right type of attitude to the football field, but the reason he has a chance to start at the middle linebacker spot is the mediocre play of Mays.

He's thinking too much.  Last year during the preseason, Mays was running all over the place making plays because he was playing instinctively and not thinking too much.

It seems that the mental part of the game has tied him up.

He's failed to make a lot of plays against the run in the first two preseason games.  He made those plays a year ago.

I see him attack inside and the play is going outside.  This isn't the Joe Mays I saw a year ago.  He's not playing instinctively anymore.

I give Sean McDermott a lot of credit for calling it like he sees it.  He's doing the right thing but he's also letting the city know that Mays isn't playing good football right now.
