I can guarantee you that this will be the first and last year that Donovan McNabb and Michael Vick will be on this football team together. I listened intently to both McNabb and Vick last night after the game and they made it plain.
Vick was the first of the two to speak. He talked about how thankful he was about being given the chance to play in the NFL again. He talked about how he had to pinch himself to prove that it was real.
He talked about trying to do more than he should have because of the way he was warmly received by the crowd. Everything he said made everybody smile until he got near the end.
One of the final things that Vick said was that hewas eager to get through this stage and back to the place where he would be playing the quarterback position exclusively again. Here's the exact quote.
"Once I get myself into tip-top shape, the sky's the limit," said Vick. "When I was younger, I did it all. I can do it all now. Down the road, I'll be back at the quarterback position full time. As of right now, I have to do what I can to win."
If he plays the QB position again in that manner that would mean McNabb would be on the bench or one of them was playing for a team other than the Philadelphia Eagles.
Next up was McNabb who was willing to let everybody know how he felt about his first game with new teammate Michael Vick.
When asked if his shuffling in and out of the lineup in the first quarter had made getting a rhythm more difficult, McNabb said, "Yes". He continued on to make it plain that he didn't like all of the back and forth.
As the season continues, there are going to be times when Vick showcases his amazing speed and gun of an arm and make the fans start asking for him. There were some murmurs last night and he only played six plays.
Wait until McNabb is struggling and Vick takes off on a 40 yard run and Andy sends McNabb back into the game. Some of the fans will boo because football fans always love the backup quarterback.
This guy isn't even in shape yet. Wait until he gets in shape and makes some jaw-dropping plays.
Still McNabb runs the offense more effectively because he knows it better than Vick.
It will be Andy Reid's job to figure out a way to use both of these guys in a productive way.
I think we're going to see Vick utilized especially in the red zone, where the team's offense continues to struggle.
After this year, one of the quarterbacks will be traded. There are a bevy of teams around the NFL which could use either McNabb or Vick at the quarterback position.
I don't know whether the guy leaving here is going to be McNabb or Vick because I know that Reid has had his eye on Vick for years. He thinks he can correct his poor techniques and unleash his tremendous ability.
