You got a chance to see all the sides of Michael Vick the quarterback last night. Any one watching the game couldn’t help but be amazed by the speed he showed in getting around the corner and jetting downfield.
I hadn’t seen him hit the accelerator quite like that. The speed is still there but the dude needs to get in shape. He was sucking air after every run.
After the game he walked around like he was still out of air.
I need to jump in here to say I could see them using him at times to offer different looks to opposing defenses. The different looks are going to anger opposing defensive coordinators because it’s going to force them to waste a lot of their time preparing for things the Eagles might not do very much.
Vick might help the Eagles most before the game in making it much harder for opponents to prepare for this football team. Teams will be spending all their time preparing for Vick, while the regular dose of McNabb, Westbrook and Jackson are eating them alive.
My advice to Andy and Marty, don’t use Vick too much.
Back to the game where Vick showed his gun of an arm and it’s inaccuracy. At times the ball was on the money, then there other times when you would say he’s got to make the easy throws.
The scrambling gave us pluses and quite a few minuses. He got tattooed by some of the Jets blitzers. Give him credit, he can still take a punch. I know Donovan McNabb was glad Vick was taking those shots and not him.
Andy Reid and Vick’s quarterback teammates had said that he remembers some of the offense but needs to freshen up on it and they were right. Too many times Vick was indecisive with the football.
From my vantage point in the press box of Giants Stadium, I saw a number of receivers who were open but not thrown to while seven was playing quarterback.
The same was true of Kevin Kolb when he played. He made some good throws like the one to Brandon Gibson on a “skinny post” where he put it up and Gibson went up and got it.
At times Kevin holds the ball too long. One of the big keys to quarterbacking in the NFL is decision-making. You’ve got to know when to rush things and also know when to take your time.
Quite a few times last night, Kolb rushed his throws to wide open receivers, then other times he held onto the ball when he could have taken a shorter throw to an open receiver. Those bad decisions wound up being sacks or incompletions.
I know Reid came out after the game and said Kolb is his number two but you’ve got to know that he is a work in progress without the athletic abilities of Vick.
Kolb remains a question mark.
