Patriots release TE Smith

The Patriots have released tight end Alex Smith.  This usually isn’t Eagles news, but there was a lot of talk lately about the Eagles possibly sending QB A.J. Feeley to New England in exchange for one if their tight ends.

Well, the talk of Feeley being dealt died down considerably over the last day or so, but they still need depth at tight end.  After Brent Celek, there is a whole lot of nothing on the roster.  Alex Smith isn’t thrilling, but he’s probably better than whatever else they have.  Whether they decide to grab him or not, I think we all agree they need to do something at the position.  Could you imagine if Celek got hurt?  Jeff Thomason still on speed dial?
