I know Omar Gaither isn’t in the best of health but he’d better stay healthy for the next four weeks because I’ve learned that Joe Mays will be out for at least that long.
He’s the only other true middle linebacker on the roster.
Mays won’t be able to play for four weeks. It has forced the Eagles to have strongside linebacker Chris Gocong get some work at the middle linebacker position.
Gocong has not only never played the middle linebacker spot, he has only played linebacker for a couple of year because before that he was a defensive end. He still has defensive end instincts.
Notice that they don’t have rookie Moise Fokou working at middle linebacker even though they tried him there during the preseason. It’s too much for the Birds to ask him to learn both the middle and outside linebacker spots at the same time.
The Birds have made two gambles on the defensive roster by going into the season without seasoned depth at the middle linebacker position and at the weak safety spot.
