McDermott Proves He Has Been A Good Student

McDermott standing on the sidelineSean McDermott and his defense made a statement today to the rest of the offenses in the NFL.  Yes, Jim Johnson is gone, but all those blitzes he designed are still here so expect contant pressure when you play the Eagles.

The truth is McDermott was the guy who designed the blitz package which dismantled Jake Delhomme and the Carolina Panthers.

It didn’t start out on a good note as the Panthers went the length of the field and ate eight and half minutes off of the clock

It seemed like all the guys got their shots at Jake Delhomme and they were coming from everywhere.

First it was Trent Cole coming up the gut on a blitz. The blitz had Victor Abiamiri and Cole standiing up over the center and guard, then blitzing at the snap of the ball.  One of the backs tried to pick up Abiamiri, but it only slowed him up.

Cole came through as free as a bird and proceded to head for a frightened and defenseless Delhomme.  He grabbed Delhomme with his right hand and punched the ball out with his left hand.

That blitz with Cole and Abiamiri, who are defensive ends, standing up as linebackers in the middle of the scheme, terrorized the Panthers all game long.

His accomplice on the caper, Abiamiri grabbed the ball and fell into the end zone.

That was the first one, but there were many more.

Darren Howard got to the Carolina quarterback two times.  He did a great job of beating the guards inside and not letting Delhomme step up in the pocket.

Akeem Jordan made a great play on a sack by jumping over a block and pulling Delhomme to the ground.

Omar Gaither and  Mike Patterson also shared a sack.

The first thing McDermott and his defensive front did was shut down the Panthers rushing game after the first drive.
