Would Jeff Garcia come to Philadelphia in this situation with the knowledge that he would only play one week and then be cut? I don’t think so. I think he’s been given a reason to believe that he’ll be here much longer.
He’s very close to Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and he trusts Marty and Marty trusts him. Mornhinweg has overseen some of the best years of his career as an Eagle and as a 49er.
I think Marty told him about how shaky Kevin Kolb looks and the fact that the Birds don’t have any confidence in him. They’ve told him that there’s a good chance that he will play on Sunday.
I like everyone else believe that Kolb will get the chance to start on Sunday. If he looks anything like he did against the Panthers he’s going to get yanked for Garcia.
Let’s be honest, on Sunday in Carolina Kolb looked like Adam DiMichelle. He didn’t look like an NFL quarterback. He had better get his act together and quickly or his dreams of ever being a starting quarterback with the Eagles will be over.
The Eagles know Garcia could be ready to play on Friday, if they needed him to be.
If Kolb continues to look like he can’t play, what sense does it make to keep him and release Garcia.
Do you think Garcia would have been interested in coming here if he knew he didn’t have a chance of staying here after one week? Think about it.
I know the Eagles wouldn’t say this publicly but think about it.
Garcia’s also been told about how Michael Vick is a development project who is here to play the out of the wildcat formation and will take some time before he’s ready to play as a pure quarterback.
He’s been told that they would rather go with him as composed to playing Vick as the starting quaterback. Garcia knows Vick and he knows he has a ways to go in running the west coast offense.
Finally Garcia was reminded of how injury-prone McNabb can be. How can that ring truer to anybody more than Jeff Garcia after his memorable experience here in Philadelphia in 2006?
McNabb is already down and it’s only week one. Garcia feels his chances of playing are good. In addition, this team may have the talent to win a Super Bowl.
Garcia’s not going to say anything publicly about what was told to him behind the scenes but he came here to play.
