It’s official now that Brian Westbrook like Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb have two years remaining on his contract. All of them will not be under contract to work for the Philadelphia Eagles after 2010.
Maybe you think that is a coincidence, but I don’t.
I’m even more convinced now that Reid, McNabb, Westbrook and the rest of this current Eagles regime have two years to either win a Super Bowl or move on. Yesterday, the Eagles turned down an option to keep Westbrook after the 2010 season.
Westbrook underwent surgery on his knee at the end of the 2008 season, which he finished running on tires that were nearly flat. Later in the off season he had his ankle cleaned out.
He’s got a lot of mileage on his body and the Eagles don’t want to run the risk of him getting injured and the team having to pay him even though he’s not playing.
I had doubts that we would ever see the Westbrook we once knew operating at full strength. We saw some of him on Sunday but I guess that didn’t impress the Philadelphia Eagles enough because they turned down an option to extend Brian’s contract past 2010.
LeSean McCoy will take over from there and the Birds will say goodbye to Westbrook.
Give it to the Eagles they don’t have any use in a player who is past his prime and likely to get injured. Running backs age quickly in the National Football League.
That’s why it was so important that he got another contract that gave him a big raise a couple of years ago.
Remember that the players say that NFL stands for Not For Long.
