The Defense’s Job Will Be Much Tougher This Week

Cole after a sack Sean McDermott used the knowledge he had gathered from coaching under Jim Johnson for 11 years to totally dismantle the Carolina Panthers with an exotic blitz scheme.

This week he has a much tougher job facing him because he must deal with an offensive scheme that gave Jim a lot of trouble.

Sean Payton did a good job of designing ways to attack Johnson and his blitz schemes, while he was the offensive coordinator with the New York Giants and in his present position as head coach of the New Orleans Saints.

Payton has utilized three-step drops by his quarterbacks at times to disarm Johsnon’s blitz package.  Normally he featured this strategy with sending all his five receivers out into the pass patterns.

They try to give Drew Brees their Pro Bowl quarterback, as many options as possible and lean upon his ability to make the correct decisions and to make the quickly.

At other times, Payton has gone to maximum protection and sent only two receivers out into the routes.   Most of the time, he teams up this blocking scheme with deep pass  routes and some times Sheldon in his stancedeep-double move pass routes.

A few years back, Payton went to maximum protection and sent Joe Horn out on a double move and he wound catching a long touchdown pass over former Eagle and current 49ers Michael Lewis.

Payton has got a quarterback in Drew Brees who is able to make quick reads and get rid of the football.

They’re going to try to stay away from making costly mistakes and they hope to frustrate McDermott and the Eagles defense by denying them any sacks or turnovers.

I expect both of the Sean’s to try to keep the other off balance by faking one thing and doing another.  McDermott will likely show blitz looks then drop out of them.

It’s going to be quite a chess match.
