Van Riemsdyk to make final roster?

The Flyers’ 2007 1st round pick, 2nd overall, is still in the mix for a final roster spot with the big club.  This is going to be an extremely difficult decision for Paul Holmgren and John Stevens.

Unless JVR is ready to play a major role, which I am not sure he is, the Flyers may be better off leaving him in the minors where he can log major minutes and further his development for the start of the season.  They should handle this kid with care and treat the situation similar to last year’s mid-season call up, Claude Giroux.

In the end, this is going to come right down to a numbers game.  The Flyers currently have eleven forwards, seven defenseman and two goalies slated for the start of the season.  Fighting for the final roster spots on the 23-man active list are former Ranger’s center Blair Betts, the unexpected rookie-forward Mike Pyorala, defenseman Danny Syvret and James van Riemsdyk.

I expect and hope that Betts will land a spot with the Flyers.  I could see Pyorala playing a similar call-up role as Nodl did last season and because of the log jam at defense, Syvret should be the odd man out.

JVR could very well be making his NHL debut on October 2nd…
