When Did The Eagles Decide They Needed Talented Weapons

Maclin making catchThis wasn’t an outstanding performance by the Eagles but it was an easy win because they have so much more talent now than they have had in the past.

Donovan McNabb threw three touchdowns, two long scores to rookie Jeremy Maclin to make it a cake walk.

DeSean Jackson is in his second year and Maclin is in his first year, yet this duo has flashed more talent than any duo the Eagles have had in the team’s history.

My question is what happened to change this team’s mentality toward putting talented weapons on the football team.  In the past the Eagles said they didn’t need one nuimber receiver.

Now from the talent exhibited by Jackson and Maclin, the Birds will probably have two of them.

They can make the argument that they drafted a wide receiver in the first round, Freddie Mitchell, but he was a major disappointment.  Tight end L.J. Smith proved to be injury-prone with inconsistent hands.

Now the Birds have Brent Celek exploding onto the scene at the tight end position and he was a fifth round pick.  Smith is in Baltimore still battling injuries.

McNabb throws to MaclinThe Eagles will deny that they made a fundamental change of how they would assemble their football team but clearly they have done just that.

For the better part of the decade they argued that they didn’t need a great receivers to be a championship team.  They debated that some how having lesser receivers made you a better football team.

I know they had no idea of how quickly Jackson, who they drafted in the second round, would impact the football team, but that wasn’t the case with Maclin.

With Jackson already on board, the Birds moved up in the first round to get Maclin.  That would never have happened with the Eagles in the previous decade.
