Everybody is celebrating all the blitzing the Eagles did against the Buccaneers on Sunday, but I’m not so enthusiastic about blitzing for about 65% of the defensive snaps.
You can do that against bad football teams but you’re not going to be able to do that against good football teams. You can mix in some blitzes against outstanding offenses, but you can’t live by it the way the Birds are doing right now.
The Eagles defense had fun against Josh Johnson and they’ll do the same thing against JaMarcus Russell, but try that against Kurt Warner, Matt Ryan and Brett Favre and you’ll get a different result.
For the Eagles to win a championship, it’s going to take them beating outstanding teams with seasoned, prepared quarterbacks.¬† Therefore you must be able to get pressure on the quarterback without relying heavily on the blitz.
Are you going to be able to blitz the New York Giants like that?  Will you blitz the Atlanta Falcons like that?
What about Minnesota and Arizona?
Great championship defenses are able to put pressure on the quarterback without continously putting themselves in jeopardy by blitzing.
Each time you blitz you’re vulnerable to a big play.¬† There’s no secondary alive that can cover the wide receivers in the league today when that team has a seasoned and prepared quarterback.
I’ll tell you this that defenses would be afraid to get blitz happy against the Eagles with a seasoned quarterback like Donovan McNabb and all the receivers he has now with DeSean Jackson, Brent Celek, Brian Westbrook, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant, Kevin Curtis and etc.
The Eagles goal is winning a championship and not just beating up on bad football teams.
