Sunday NFL notes

How is this for adding insult to injury?  Not only did the Eagles lose to a dreadful Raiders team last week, the guy that lead the Raiders to that victory has been benched this week.

That’s right, JaMarcus Russell was yanked with the Raiders down 21-0 to the New York Jets.¬† He was so bad, that they decided Bruce Gradkowski gave them a better chance to win.¬† Ouch. Russell was 6-11 for 61 yards with two INT’s and a fumble.¬† If I was the NFL owners, I would bring a picture of Russell to the meetings with the player’s union as Evidence A of why these huge rookie contracts are a bad idea.¬†¬†

Here are some other things happening around the NFL today:

-There was another benching involving a former first-overall pick in the NFL draft.¬† But this one went in the other direction.¬† The San Francisco 49ers decided it was time to yank QB Shaun Hill after they were getting trounced by the Texans.¬† Alex Smith came in and fired three TD’s to another former first-round selection, TE Vernon Davis.¬† He couldn’t complete the comeback though and the 49ers fell to the Texans 24-21.¬† But that’s a loss with promise if the Niners found someone to improve their QB play.¬†

-Colts WR Reggie Wayne tweaked his groin in the game against the Rams and spent several series on the bench.  He still caught seven passes for 83 yards and a TD.

-Bernard Berrian left Sunday’s game against the Steelers with a bum hamstring.¬† He’s been having issues with that since the preseason.¬† The Vikings went down 27-17 to the Steelers and it was a Brett Favre INT returned for a TD that sealed their fate.¬† In all honesty though, that pick was on Chester Taylor.¬† Get your hands up!

-Don’t look now but the Saints are getting smacked in the mouth by the Dolphins.¬† The Dolphins went up 24-3, but Brees fired a TD pass to get them a little closer before the half.¬† Still a lot of football to be played and I don’t think anyone is going to count out Brees and that offense.¬†

-If this was English Premier League soccer, the Rams, Browns and Chiefs would be in danger of getting sent down to the second division at the end of the year.  Awful.  Maybe they will be assigned to the UFL.

-If you’ve been having trouble sleeping, just try to find the Bills/Panthers game on TV.¬† 7-2.¬† Zzzzzzz.
