Look at the scoreboard from last night‚Äôs game and you‚Äôll see a convincing victory. Look at the stats and you‚Äôll see ‚Äúeh…‚Äù.
Granted, Washington gained quite a few garbage time yards and points. However, the concern from last night wasn’t the defense which pitched in its share of scoring. The concern was the offense. After being given a short field a few times early in the game, the offense came up with field goals and punts.
That may be good for a 10 point win over the hapless Skins, but the G-Men are coming to town on Sunday. The offense will have to show that it can take advantages of opportunities when playing against a good defense.
With all of the weapons the Birds have, there’s no way a drive starting at the opponent’s 25 yard line should go 3 plays and -1 yards, as did happen yesterday. There is no way that they should finish a game with under 300 yards (they finished with 262 at Washington). Yes, they won this time, but the offense really didn’t show much improvement from last week.
Performances like that with the Giants and Cowboys coming up could have this team sitting at .500 as they hit the half-way point of the season.
Other notes:
DeSean Jackson, on his second TD, once again proved that he likes to dance and celebrate more than he likes to score TDs. As skinny as he is, he needs to make sure he gets in the endzone first instead of starting the celebration at the five, getting hit and risking injury. The team needs him on the field.
Also on Jackson, he did a terrific job of getting into the endzone on that reverse. At the end of the play he set up his block without losing speed which enabled him to reach the endzone on a play in which many others would have been caught at the 10.
Will Witherspoon proved to be a great addition even aside from the two turnovers he caused. He was sorely needed.
