Phillies decline option on Feliz

I know, I know.¬† After a loss like that to the Cowboys, you want to read about and talk Eagles.¬† Sorry, but I have to post this even though it’s not the hot topic of the day.¬†

The Philies have declined to pick up the $5.5 million option on third baseman Pedro Feliz.¬† I’m not sure how to feel about this because you don’t know what their plans are to replace him.¬† He is an absolute vacuum at third with a rocket arm that would make NASA jealous.¬† But that .266 average?¬† And his lousy presence at the plate where he doesn’t even seem to have any sort of a plan?¬† Those are tough to take, especially from a position known for producing offense.

So what else is out there?¬† Free agents at the position are scheduled to be Seattle’s Adrian Beltre, St. Louis’ Mark DeRosa and Anaheim’s Chone Figgins.¬†

Figgins wouldn’t come cheap and Anaheim isn’t likely to let him walk.¬† DeRosa is 34-years old so he wouldn’t be someone you’d sign for more than a small handful of years if you wanted to go in that direction.¬†

Yes, Seattle paid wayyyy too much for Beltre back in 2005 when he was coming off a 48-HR season, but for the most part he’s been a 20+ HR guy.¬† Last season he was hurt and only played in 111 games.¬† He hit a point less than Feliz in batting average and had just eight HR’s.¬† Yes, that’s awful.¬† Yes, you hope he saved some of the $13.4 million he made last year because he’ll never see that kind of money again.¬† But maybe he comes a bit cheaper coming off the injury.

Personally, I’m not thrilled with any of these options unless they wanted to open their wallets for Figgins.¬†
