Brian Westbrook’s disappointing 2009 season could be over. Today he will be examined by a concussion expert in Pittsburgh.
He could shut him down for the season or leave the door open for a comeback.
Yesterday the Eagles released this statement by trainer Rick Burkholder.
“The Eagles have confirmed a report that RB Brian Westbrook will visit two concussion specialists on Wednesday, November 18 in Pittsburgh, PA. The Eagles will first have Westbrook consult with neuropsychologist Mark R. Lovell, PhD. Following that visit Westbrook and Lovell will consult with neurosurgeon Joseph Maroon, MD. Dr. Lovell has been consulting with the Eagles’ medical staff on Westbrook’s recovery from the first concussion during the past three weeks.”
Right now concussion injuries are radioactive.
The Eagles are going to let Westbrook back on the field until they get the clearance from a number of experts.
Evidence is starting to mount that the concussions suffered by former NFL players has contributed to all kinds of behavorial alterations and medical problems.
A study was recently made public and taken before Congress which suggested that the concussions cause brain damage.
A number of former players who suffered numerous concussions have died prematurely.
And of course a former teammate of mine, former Eagles safety Andre Waters took his life and the after effects of concussions are thought to be the reasons.
