One of the secrets of the Eagles deep throwing success has been getting DeSean Jackson matched up one-on-one with a safety.
Jackson’s speed and quickness make it a total mismatch. The designated victim was Bears safety Al Alfalava.
They got the match up they wanted last night by sending Jackson on a short motion inside from his right flanker position. In the cover two coverage, the cornerbacks are up in the faces of the receivers to jam them as they come off the line of scrimmage.
They knew the cornerback would have to release him inside, if they had Jackson go in motion inside of tight end Brent Celek. The cornerback had to stop and jam Celek because his assignment is to holdup the outside receiver.
Jackson got his release and sped downfield directly at safety Al Alfalava. He went by Alfalava like he was standing still and headed inside to the post.
The offensive line did a good job of giving McNabb time to throw and he let it fly deep.
Jackson caught it in the end zone and that was six points for the Birds.
On another scoring play, the Eagles snuck a screen on the Bears who had no idea that the Birds would throw a screen to slot receiver Jason Avant.
They had Avant come in motion from the right side of the formation to the left side of the formation. They ran a play fake toward the other side and had McNabb roll to his right.
All the backs and McNabb were on the right side of the formation.
The Bears did a great job on the Eagles screens all night long, but they got caught sleeping this time.
The linebackers followed the tight end and backs to the right side and all the Bears had on the left side was a defensive back to cover Avant.
He stood still for a second after the ball was snapped, then he slid deeper in the backfield and looked for the ball from McNabb. He caught the ball and jumped behind Todd Herremans and Jamaal Jackson.
They escorted him into the endzone with little resistance. Bears safety Alfalava was again the guy at the scene of the crime. He was day late and a dollar short.
