DeSean named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

DeSean Jackson has received the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week award following his 72-yard punt return for a TD Sunday night against the Giants.

It’s the second time he’s collected the trophy (I don’t believe there is really a trophy involved, maybe an achievement certificate) this season.¬† He’s also been named NFC Special Teams Player of the Month, as well as NFC Offensive Player of the Week during the 2009 season.¬†

DeSean has only caught 50 balls this season, which isn’t a ton for a #1 wide receiver.¬† But DeSean is different, he does things with his catches that others just don’t do.¬† Plus, the Eagles have a lot of guys to get involved in the offense, so they just can’t target DeSean down after down.¬† And that’s part of what makes him so outright explosive.¬† With all the weapons the Eagles have, defenses just can’t devote the proper attention to him that he deserves.¬† And that’s when he lights up your defense and changes games.

DeSean has 947 yards this year and will surly surpass 1,000 (even though that really isn’t much of a bar anymore).¬† He is averaging a whopping 18.9 yards a catch, which is tops in the NFL amongst receivers with more than 20 catches.¬† He is also tops in the NFL with nine catches for 40+ yards.¬† Andre Johnson, a big-play monster in his own right, is second with seven.¬† And we all know about DeSean’s record-tying TD’s of plus 50 yards, which I think it’s more likely than not that he snaps that.¬†

Other than Chris Johnson down in Tennessee, I’m not sure that there is a more explosive weapon in football.¬†
