I told you about three weeks ago that I thought rookie Moise Fokou could be a better strongside linebacker than Chris Gocong, Now it looks like the Eagles are thinking the same way.
Fokou will be splitting time with Gocong on Sunday at the strongside linebacker position.
I don’t think they’re going to give the third year backer a contract offer because he’s not a very productive Sam or strongside linebacker. A good Sam gets his hands on footballs in the passing game.
Chris hasn’t been able to do that.
I think Gocong could be an outstanding 3-4 outside linebacker, who should be making his living rushing the passer.
He steps forward on the attack all the time and it allows all the tight ends who face the Eagles to get easy releases.
It’s not a matter of intelligence, it goes deeper than that. You don’t play the game of football in the cognitive area of the brain.
Football is instinctive and Gocong is wired to be a pass rusher or attacker. It takes too much time and effort to rewire a players instincts.
Vernon Davis is licking his chops to get out there against the Birds.
Fokou is a promising you linebacker who has the ability and intelligence to be a good strongside linebacker.
He’s got good coverage skills and would be a better matchup for Davis than Gocong.
Fokou won’t be in there full-time, but he will get the lion share of the pass down plays.
The Niners are going to be getting the ball to Davis all over the field but especially in the red zone.
We’ll see what kind of job the rookie does.
