Don’t Believe Blitzing Is The Answer To Everything

Witten fighting for more yardageI know everybody’s talking about the Eagles not blitzing enough versus the Cowboys.¬† As I see it, not bltizing enough isn’t the problem, not blitzing effectively is the problem.

How can you leave Tony Romo’s number one target, Jason Witten, running alone and by himself across the field?¬† Romo knows where he is at all times and will get the ball to him if he’s not covered.

They are easy throws and they allow Romo the ability to get the ball out of his hands anytime he wants.

If you’re not going to take a way the number one receiver who Romo likes to get the ball to, then why bother blitzing.

In addition, too many times, the Eagles are showing too early.¬† They’ve got to learn to disguise it better.

Crayton and Witten celebrate The more they blitz, the more important open field tackling is going to come into play.  If Asante Samuel and Miles Austin are in a one on one situation and Austin catches the football, Samuel is going to have to tackle him.

Chances are there won’t be anybody else in the area to make the tackle.¬† Do you feel comfortable with Samuel tackling Austin in the open field?

I don’t think blitzing is necessarily the answer.¬† I do think you have to blitz to mix it up but I also believe you can get caught blitzing too much and give up a lot of big plays.

They must take away outlets for Romo when they blitz.

The cornerbacks are supposed to be playing inside technique on the blitzes but I saw Joselio Hanson giving up the inside throw.¬† You can’t do that and have an effective blitz package.
