Why did we ever trade draft picks with the Cowboys, so that they were able to select pass rushing linebacker Anthony Spencer and we could get Kevin Kolb in the second round rather than the first?
I know they saved money from not having to pay Kolb first round dollars, but was worth it. Normally you never ever help a team in your division, especially your arch-rival.
The Eagles dismissed it right after that draft but now it’s coming back to haunt them.
Spencer is starting to blossom as a star and he was one of the last pieces of the puzzle for the Dallas defense. I think they may have the best defense left in the playoffs and I know you’ve heard, offenses win games and defenses win championships.
I think you must have an outstanding pass rusher coming from each side of the defensive line to have a truly dominant defense. Teams can double team and chip one receiver but it’s nearly impossible to focus on a quality pass rusher from each side.
Thanks to the Eagles the Cowboys now have Pro Bowler DeMarcus Ware coming from one side and the speedy Spencer coming from the other.
Now, they can get consistent pressure on the quarterback without blitzing. It’s what Super Bowl caliber defenses have.
I think the Eagles defense has proven that you can’t have success late in the playoffs and Super Bowl, if you have to send five, six and seven rushers after the passer to put pressure on him.
The Eagles have been a team that relies on the blitz and in the four championship games and one Super Bowl that the team has lost, they have forced a total of only one interception and one fumble.
Ironically, the Eagles still are lacking a second dominant outside pass rusher to pair with Trent Cole while Ware and Spencer terrorize quarterbacks in the playoffs.
In addition for the forseeable future, the Eagles will have to deal with Ware and Spencer each time they play Dallas.
