After doing some research around the Eagles quarterback situation, I think there’s more of a chance that Donovan McNabb won’t be a an Eagle next year as compared to him staying here.
Andy Reid remains his biggest supporter but not everybody else in the Eagles front office thinks he should be kept around.
I’ve talked to a number of NFL personnel people who tell me that there were receivers open whom McNabb could have gotten the ball to in both of those Dallas games. They don’t think he sees the field like the very best quarterbacks in the league.
I thought he had some time in the 24-0 Dallas game, but the last one I thought the offensive line was destroyed and he was running for his life the entire time.
I’ve talked to a number of NFL people who doubt he stays here for the next season.
At the same time I’ve talked to a few othe NFL people who say that McNabb wasn’t given enough consistent time to get the job done in the Dallas games. They said Dallas manhandled the Birds and McNabb didn’t have a chance ot save the day.
Personally I don’t think McNabb has been getting better during the last few years. I’ve had people in the organization tell me that McNabb isn’t coached and held accountable like everyone else.
They say that Reid doesn’t chew McNabb out when makes a mistake like he does the rest of the squad.
This is very troubling because I’ve heard this numerous times from different people.
I have a lot of respect for Andy Reid as a head coach, but I don’t like the way he coaches his franchise quarterbacks. I saw the same pattern with Brett Favre that I’m seeing with McNabb.
Reid wasn’t there for much of Brett Favre’s career in Green Bay, but he was there in the beginning. He and Mike Holmgren did a great job of developing Favre, but when Holmgren left the rest of the coaches refused to dicscipline him and his play was mediocre.
Favre would throw the most interceptions in the NFL year after year after year and no one would say anything to him.
I remember talking to people about what former Eagles coach Ray Rhodes experienced when he tried to discipline Favre. You can’t let any players function without accountability.
McNabb’s accuracy problems haven’t improved in years, yet it doesn’t seem like he’s called on the carpet for it.
If Andy Reid isn’t going to coach Donovan McNabb then he might as trade him and let Kevin Kolb run the show. On the other hand if he’s going to demand that McNabb improve his accuracy, who knows.
Remember that Reid believes in loyalty and the Eagles aren’t going to give McNabb away.
