According to a recent report from Howard Eskin of 610 WIP and NBC, the younger Eagles offensive players turned to Kevin Kolb for advice on the sidelines this year as opposed to Donovan McNabb.
What does this mean?¬† Is this a sign that Donovan has to go?¬† That the younger players just don’t trust him?
No, not really, but I guess it could be an issue.
Maybe some of the younger players are more comfortable with Kevin Kolb.¬† Is it possible that some of these guys are a bit intimidated to be approaching Donovan?¬† Considering that many of these guys watched him growing up and idolized him, that could be the case.¬† Maybe Kolb is just more approachable. I’m not saying that’s the case, just trying figure out why this might be.¬† Generation gap?
Does this mean that Kolb is the better leader as some have suggested elsewhere?¬† I can’t imagine that’s the deal here (and a side note:¬† it’s really annoying listening to everyone talk about leadership and who is a leader and who isn’t.¬† And what qualities this leader or that leader has to have.¬† If you aren’t in that locker room every day and don’t know the inner workings and dynamics of this team, you really don’t know.¬† To quote Jim Mora, you think you know, but you really don’t know, and you never will.¬† And I certainly don’t either, nor do I pretend to).¬† I don’t see how this is a leadership issue, depending on what types of questions and advice they were seeking.¬† If it’s a simple, “what route was I supposed to run there?”, I’m sure Kolb would know; he certainly knows the offense.
It could suggest that there is an in-house feeling of a movement to Kolb.¬† Maybe things are indeed moving that way.¬† But just because younger players more routinely sought Kolb’s advice on the sidelines, doesn’t mean that has any impact on what the organization thinks of Donovan.¬†
I’m just trying to come up with reasons that the younger players may favor Kolb’s advice over Donovan’s.¬† The truth is I’m really not sure.¬† If I’m a kid on this team – no offense to Kolb – but I’m asking the guy who has been in the offense for 11 years.¬† Whether you think Donovan’s a leader or not, Andy Reid is probably the only person who knows more about the nuances of this system.¬†¬†
While all of this is complete speculation on my part, it’s really tough to truly know what to make of this report without knowing what types of things they were going to Kolb about.¬†
