Phillies sign Contreras to a one-year deal

According to ESPN Deportes’ Enrique Rojas’ Twitter account, the Phillies have signed Jose Contreras to a one-year deal.

“Filis firman a cubano Jose Contreras por una temporada. Acuerdo no incluye opciones para futuras temporadas,” he tweets (I told you it was ESPN Deportes.¬† I can’t speak Spanish, I saw it on Rotoworld).

Remember when Contreras was supposed to be the next stud?  Looooong time ago.

Speaking of long, that’s the type of reliever the Phillies probably envision him as.¬† He had a decent stint with the Rockies last year with a 1.59 ERA.¬† If he can fill the void left by Chan Ho Park, then this is a good move.

There continues to be a lot of debate about why Cliff Lee had to be moved and I think this is part of the reason.¬† No, I don’t mean that they needed to make room for the 38-year old Contreras.¬† I think when Amaro was going through the payroll in his head at the time, he knew he still had to address the bullpen and that was going to require a few dollars.¬†
