Last night I was on 610-WIP and we got into an interesting discussion about Allen iverson, Julius “Dr. J” Erving and Michael Jordan.
I was continuing an argument which I heard Howard Eskin and Ike Reese having about Iverson and Dr. J. Which one was better Iverson or Dr. J?
Iverson was the greatest scoring little man in the history of the league. He’s barely six feet if that yet he led the league in scoring numerous times and was the league’s Most Valuable Player in the 2001 season.
Yet I think Dr. J was a more complete player. He could rebound and block shots. His shooting percentage was much higher than Allen’s.
I’m not saying it’s a runaway but I would have to rank Dr. J ahead of Allen.
Dr. J was the most graceful athlete I’ve ever seen. I saw he do incredible things with the New York Nets before he ever came to the NBA.
He was the most entertaining player I have ever seen. I saw him dunk on entire teams.
He saved the NBA with ability to excite basketball fans world wide with his brand of above the rim basketball.
On the other hand, many die-hard Dr. J supporters try to argue that he was better than Michael Jordan which is ridiculous.
As I see it, Jordan was the best and most complete player the NBA has ever seen. He was a great defensive player. He was a great scorer and great shooter. Most of all Jordan was the ultimate leader and winner.
Dr. J was able to win only one title and that was with Mose Malone, Andrew Toney, Bobby Jones and etc on the squad.
I’m not denying that Doc was a great player, I’m just saying that he wasn’t on Jordan’s level.
