I don’t have any problem with what DeSean Jackson had to say about the Eagles finally pulling the trigger on a trade of Donovan McNabb because it was about time they did it.
Jackson and the rest of the players were tired of answering questions about McNabb and trying to make sure they don’t say anything to disrespect McNabb or Kevin Kolb.
Now that the trade has been made, some in the media have tried to characterize it as if Jackson was saying he wanted to get rid of McNabb.¬† It wasn’t that but there was all of this tension and uncertainty hanging over the team.
Now they know who their quarterback is and they can move forward.
“My first thought was — not to say, “About time” — but just sitting around with just the rumors¬†… it was just kind of tough for the team,” Jackson said. “Not knowing who was going to be here and who was going to stay. It’s almost kind of a relief to know what we have here and just to go forward.”
The fact that people will try to create a controversy out of something that isn’t a controversy is the reason that players don’t like dealing with some in the media.
Jackson laid it out correctly when he said he wasn’t the one making the decision about McNabb staying or going.
“I don’t know why anybody would think that,”¬†Jackson said. “Whatever the case was, if McNabb would have stayed another year … that’s not my decision.”
Don’t worry Jackson wll say enough to stir up controversy.¬† We don’t need to put any words in his mouth.
Did you have a problem with anything Jackson said?¬† I didn’t.
I think DJax doesn’t like McNabb, especially since he was thrown under the bus by his QB. One odd thing is that he doesn’t ever call McNabb by his first name. One would think that teammates who like each other would do that. And I have never heard DJax praise McNabb either. May be I am reading too much into this.
First of Desean Jackson has been here 2 years. What does he know about “time for a change”. We’ll see about time for a change when his stats are not as good because he definitely will not catch as many deep balls from Kolb as McNabb. He will catch some and he will catch more intermediate plays but I definitely don’t think there will be as many deep plays over 50 yards like last year. Obviously, this is where Desean is most deadly. So we will see when he starts crying that he’s not getting the ball. This offense may be more efficient but I doubt it will be as explosive as least in 2010. But we will see.
Reidsucks, Desean called him Don several times. Yeah he sure didn’t like McNabb throwing him 50 yard bombs down the field. Who would like that?
Just like after the KC game when DJax was asked who threw a better ball, he gave the usual PC answer, but the look on his face was “Are you kidding me? Did you see my YAC in the KC game?” I hear alot of us talk about the slant routs and curls and quick out and I believe that those are going to become more relevant w/ Kolb under center because of his accuracy and timimg and release. By 2011 or 2012 (if there’s a lockout) Kolb will be in a great rythem with these “Young Guns” and then….watch out!
Young Guns blastin through the NFC. Ohhhhh Yeahhhhh!!!!!!!
If there is any justice in this world we will beat the Cowboys to go on to win the Superbowl IN DALLAS and start a winning streak that all envy.
Ok I put the pipe down-
I think we will surprise a lot of people this year as long as we have a solid defensive draft.
@scorpiodsu: I must have missed that. I still think DJax started to dislike his Don, after being thrown under the bus.
We showed our youth (Meep Meepp Bump)
scorpiodsu…I agree with you on what does he know about change. I don’t really have any problem with what he says…but I think he’ll do just as well with short passes and YAC..we shall see
tko I think he will still be successful but his game is the deep ball. Receivers his size should not be running a lot of underneath patterns unless they are slot receivers. You start sending him underneath too many times, LBs and safeties will eventually get free shots on him and I don’t think anyone wants that. And guys that put up a lot of YAC yards tend to be guys that break tackles. Desean isn’t breaking any tackles. Let’s be honest. I’m not counting on him catching too many 5 yard slants and taking it deep. Only way that happens is if the defense has messed up coverage but that stuff doesn’t work on the good teams. His speed was easily neutralized by putting an agressive DB in his face and rolling the safety over the top. This is why we need Maclin to become very good. I personally like his upsize over Desean because he has the speed to beat you deep, the strength to break a tackle and the size to be dominate in intermediate routes.
We have seen that if Desean can’t beat you deep he is almost invisible on the field whereas guys like Avant, Maclin and Celek were hurting teams all over the field. Kolb will need a big arm for Desean to be effective. He doesn’t need to have a cannon but he will need to be able to buy sometime (especially if o-line isn’t good) to allow Desean to use his best attribute, speed and get him the ball down the field. Otherwise good teams will be content with him catch 5 yard passes because his little behind isn’t breaking a tackle lol.
Sorry scorp…but you don’t give DJax enough credit for being a good football player. The way you are talking is making it seem like DJax can’t do anything but run the deep go route. This isn’t the case at all. Matter of fact, Desean is one of the best route runners at the WR position if you watch his film. Also, you are making it seem like Kolb can’t throw a 40-50 yard pass. This also is not the case.
The WR position is about creating seperation. It’s about creating that distance between yoruself and the DB to create a window for the QB to throw to. While you are correct that McNabb was hitting Jackson with the deep ball, it doesn’t mean that throwing less deep balls will limit the production of Desean. If Desean and Kolb can get the timing down, they will be virtually unstoppable. Kolb has a quick release, he gets the ball out of his hand. Desean will be running routes that create seperation. If Kolb delivers the ball on time Desean will be able to get the YAC’s.
Also, for the deep ball. The chances will still be there. And when the play is called in the huddle for Kolb to hurl the ball 50 yards to an open Desean then believe me the ball will be thrown 50 yards to Desean. But the deep ball is not called on every play so you can’t over emphasize that point.
As for the change point, if you have a guy that has been playing with McNabb for 2 years and practicing with Kolb for two years and he wants Kolb to go from practice to real time then he obviously likes something about the kid.
I have no problem with him speaking his mind. It doesn’t make him any less of a football player.
I think Desean may just think if we’re going young, let’s go young everywhere. Not saying it’s right, just saying he may think “this is our time” type of thing and may respond to a more passionate Q.B. That being said I wish Donovan luck.
My concern is less about what the players say and how Reid will screw up the draft. We need to go heavy on the defense. Reid the G.M. is almost as stubborn as Reid the coach. I think it’s amazing for a guy to be so obbsessed with the lines and how pedestrian both of them are!
It’s funny how much weight some people put on the KC game. lol.
Anyway, I know DeSean is young and wants to be the star of the show so I can see where he might be fine with the team moving Donovan…it still was a fairly dumb comment to make since he’s not played long enough to really say whether a team can win consistently without a franchise quarterback. It’s fair for people to be critical of what he said, because honestly because if 9 out of 10 people took away him saying he was glad the team traded Donovan McNabb I have to believe that’s probably what he meant.
From game standpoint it will be interesting see whether injuries pile up on receivers since the offense will be fairly restricted to short and up the middle type passes. Words like these tend to come back and haunt people in that way.
scorp you are such a little bitch.
