King: Eagles Moving Up In 1st Round For Berry Or Thomas

Peter King of Sports Illustrated reports that the Philadelphia Eagles want to move up in the first round to get one of the top two safeties, either Eric Berry or Earl Thomas.

“Let me rephrase that — I know they want to come up. The Eagles are in a very small club, teams that want to jump up from low in the first round to the upper half. I believe Philly wants one of the two safeties in the draft — Eric Berry of Tennessee or Earl Thomas of Texas. With the 24th, 35th, 55th and 70th picks, the Eagles absolutely have the ammo to move up.”

King also said the Eagles draft partners might be the Jaguars or the Miami Dolphins.  He says the Jacksonville GM loves additional picks and the Dolphins have only one pick, number 12 in the first round,  in the top 70.

To me this is a confirmation but it’s not news because it’s very obvious.

As I said in the previous posting, the Eagles will try to take care of their safety needs in the first round and their cornerback needs in the second round.

I think Derrick Morgan is in the mix, as well as center Maurkice Pouncey.

If we trade up we should take one of the safeties..i’ll even take DE Derrick Morgan..but DONT TRADE UP FOR AN OFFENSIVE LINEMAN…PLEASE…If we stay at 24 we should take Talor Mays and a CB in the 2nd (Patrick Robinson, Kareem Jackson, Perrish Cox)

Stay at 24 and move up in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. We have 5 picks in the first 3 rounds. This draft is deep, very deep from all indications. Berry is out of the question but if Thomas is around at 20. Use the 24th and a 4th and 5th to move up 4 spots. Keep all picks in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd rounds. Use next years picks if need be but not this years.

Moving up and wanting to move up are 2 different things. Love that reporting.

Anyhow, It would be good if they can. The problem is figuring out where berry will be. Because you might move up but still too high for Berry but too low to get Thomas. But if you think Thomas is worth the first 15 picks then it’s a good deal. And G, you’re right, our current safeties are a joke. Since we do have 2 2nd round picks might as well give one of them up with our first to get to the first half of the first round. Most likely this is what you’ll have to give up especially to get in the top 10.

This is in stark contrast to moving out of the 1st round for a years. I wonder why? Could money be a factor?

drummer, maybe the finally figured out you need first round draft picks. Last year they moved up a couple spots to get Maclin. And Joe banner with the definition of insanity. Maybe it’s time for them to something totally opposite of what they would do.

They will obviously wait until the draft starts to play out. Who know’s what they’ll do – it is always the unexpected. Plus, with the break between the first and second/third rounds, we could see a lot more action.

PS – I saw that Rocky McIntosh might want a trade away from the Redskins. Wonder how he would look in green?

Rocky McIntosh could be a good role player, might be worth offering up a late round pick for….

the draft is deep. the birds should draft offensive line since near end of season the line just sucked big time. not sold on justice as a stud rt. either draft rt. or guard. the secondary is a postion that could be had from the second round to the later rounds.

If Berry isn’t taken by the 7th overall pick….you HAVE to move up and get him.

This kid is the best defensive prospect in the past decade. The only reason he isn’t he 1st overall pick is becuase he plays safety. His game is as close to flawless as you are gonig to find. Not to mention he is extremely intelligent when it comes to the sport of football.

The Eagles should do everything the possibly can to get Berry. I’d be willing to give up our 1st, 2nd and 5th to get high enough to pick him up.

Draft an O lineman before D secondary – are you Andy Reid?
Really, that’s not the way to go.
Our O line doesn’t suck, our secondary does.

Actually if you have to make a small move to get Pouncey (YES a center OUR BIGGEST NEED) do it. If they don’t want Pouncey then I would look at a guy like Carlos Dunlap as a value at 24. We can add a quality Safety and Corner in the second round.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Andy “everything starts in the trenches” Reid trades up and drafts a tackle or DE. I mean seriously, when was the last time this team did something that was predictable?

If you want a safety, trade up and get the sure thing.

I’m not sold on anyone in the 2nd or 3rd round. I think there are some good players, but they can be hit or miss. Berry is the real deal.

If you don’t want a safety then you stay put and watch the board play out. At 24 if Pouncey is there then you take him. I don’t think we will move up for him.

Now if Berry is gone in the top 5 and there is a DE who begins to fall like Derrick Morgan, then I can see us trading up to pick up a DE.

I agree G, I don’t see Dunlap being the pick. He’s too much of a project. He can become a great player but I don’t think the organization is looking for a guy who can play in a year or two. They want someone who can step on the field and be a factor from Day 1.

If they somehow get Berry that would be crazy!!!!!!!!!! People around the league are saying he is a sure thing to become a hall of famer. Who else in this draft can you say that about. But its gonna take alot to get him. He isnt gonna get past the 4th or 5th pick. Thats probly gonna take this years 1st round pick and next years along with a couple 2nd rounders.

Berry is the closest to a “sure thing” but let’s not get carried away…. HOF already? Now that’s just hilarious. His impact on the league will depend on the system he’s in and the coaches. I would love to see him in an aggressive defense but if he’s drafted to a team with a conservative defensive scheme then we can definitely save the HOF talk for another time. He would like nice in midnight green for sure.

have we forgot that the eagles have spent picks on safties in the last two drafts. its insane to me to keep drafting the same position. eveyone wants berry or thomas because they are the hot sexy picks. the good teams win with great line play on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

*NEWS FLASH*

Like Vricchini has been saying Taylor Mays may be heading to the Seahawks if you have been watching espn you have been seeing Pete Carroll has been bring in his old USC protege. I like how this article and everyone is saying move up to draft Earl but the fact of the matter is that there is a huge possiblity that all three Earl, Mays and Berry may be gone before the eagles 24th pick.

Paul Mancini

I don’t think Pouncey will fall into the 2nd Rd Lewdoggie20,
The Cowboys and also the Colts have a strong interest in him as well as they currently have
aging Centers on their rosters in A Gurode and J Saturday who probably don’t have much time left…
Also many scouts that Pouncey could also be an excellen Guard..(I think the Colts select him,
have him play at Guard for a season or 2 and then switch him to Center when J Saturday retires..)

If they do trade up it has to be Berry if they don’t then it’s Pouncey and they will address their corner and safety needs in Round 2, I love Nate Allen at safety he’ll be an immediate upgrade.

Berry is going to be a great player, but we would have to give up entirely too much to get him. If Thomas is available in the 14-23 range, we should definitely grab him.
