Report That Eagles Could Move Way Up To Get Berry

With only hours remaining unitl the 2010 NFL draft begins, the NFL.com is reporting that the Eagles want to move up very high in the first round, even as high as the number five pick in the draft in order to land Tennessee safety Eric Berry.

Derrin Horton of the NFL Network is stationed at the Eagles Nova Care complex and he tells us that sources are letting him know that the Eagles want Berry in the worst way.

The former Volunteer¬† safety¬† is considered a can’t miss player who will step in for an NFL team, start from day one and make perennial trips to the Pro Bowl.

He would really be a replacement for for future Hall of Famer Brian Dawkins who left for Denver last off season.

The Eagles are also said to have their eyes on Georgia Tech defensive end Derrick Morgan and South Florida defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul.

I don’t see how they could possibly acquire any two of those players because of when they’re expected to go high in the first round.

The Eagles do have quite a few picks and they plan on making a splash early.

Would require too much to get to the top 5, unless teams are willing to accept a very jigh pick from next yrs draft packaged with a pick or 2 in this years. Theres just too much talent in the 2nd-4th to move a few or all of the picks for one player, who happens to be a safety which the eagles just do not value that high. I personally would LOVE Berry after watching every snap he was involved in at the college level. He is the real deal and I believe could play CB as well. Just dont see it happening.

I think trading up to the 10-12th spot and landing Earl Thomas or Derrick Morgan, with Joe Hadne also being a possibility

I agree with possibly moving up to get Earl Thomas, he is a true ballhawk, and it would most likely only cost a 1 & 2…If we stay at 24 though I would like to see Taylor Mays name called

So now the Eagles will move up to the top 5-10 spots to draft either Berry and Thomas..
Is this the same FO and leadership that just released, traded 12 veterans who were over 30 years of age and shedded almost 50% of their teams payroll and now are going to want to move up and pay Top $$$ in guanteed $$$$ to a player who hasn’t played a down in the NFL yet… And they are going to trade away additional draft selctions in order to accomplish this. I don’t believe it for one minute….

#24, #55 & next year’s #1 to move up and draft Eric Berry.

Do this…please. The kid is a true ball player. There will NOT be another DB/S in the next couple years that can match his ability. So package next year’s first and get it done.

Then when Day 2 rolls around you can use #37 to either A) draft another defensive player (Jackson from Alabama) or B) trade #37 and a 4th or 5th for a 1st next year.

IMO, if you want Berry…then go get him, no questions asked. Don’t settle for 2nd best.

If they draft Taylor Mays of Jason Pierre Paul, I will be truly pissed. They are both amazing athletic specimens, but our D is so full of holes that we don’t have time for project players right now. Like it or not, they are both project players with a high likelihood of being busts. Taylor Mays looks great on paper, but he will get absolutely burned all over the place in the NFL.

I am fine with moving up, as long as we don’t break the bank. If you are using a 2 and maybe a late 3 to get someone who is a sure thing, it makes total sense. We all saw the effect losing BDawk had on our D. Bringing in someone like Berry or Thomas would have an instant impact. There is currently a lot of talk about the Redskins taking Berry, which is ridiculous. Their line is in horrible shape. The most likely scenario I see is moving up to Jacksonville’s spot to take Thomas….or holding at 24 and taking a CB that they could have waited until 37 to get.

No way do I trade #24/ #55 and a next years 1st Round pick for anyone…

WX20…enuff with the Taylor Mays love fest….I bet you work at WalMart or something. I can see moving up though, if not then one of the best CB’s at 24.

I’m with you Paulman I wouldn’t mind #24 and #55 to move up and get Thomas. Berry is legit and has been hyped up a ton, which makes getting him next to impossible with where we sit. It always is an interesting time of year.

Funny thing is the picture here looks like he just punched that WR the f out…

#24 and #55 will not be enough to move into 10, 11 or 12 to get Thomas either. And Thomas has been getting hyped up just as much as Berry…

Both are good players, but both will take a package of picks to get. I say do it..

I would rather have Berry/Thomas and then a CB at #37 then draft 10 rookie wanna be’s.

It will cost too much to move up. If we do trade up that far we probably will have given up picks that we could use to fill other holes on our team. For example if we had to give up 3 picks in this draft like a 1st one of the 2nds and a 4th or 5th, I’d rather be able to draft 3 very good players with those picks than draft 1 great player. But that’s just me. Thomas seems more feasible and best for the draft overall. Having said that, I just hope they take the best defensive player available we they do pick.

Would you rather have…

Kareem Jackson
Nate Allen
and the best DE at #55

or…

Eric Berry
Devin McCourty
and no 1st round next year.

Problem is scorp….you don’t know who are 3 very good players…it’s all a gamble. Berry is the closest to a sure thing.

Not to mention we have 10 picks…there is no way we are drafting 10 guys then UDFA’s to fill the team. Some of those picks will be moved…

IMO, I would take Eric Berry and whoever we get at #37… over any 3, 4 or 5 players we would draft otherwise…again that is just me. I’m more of the “want him go get him” guy instead of the “well let’s hope we get lucky with this guy”

NO. We need depth not to mortgage the farm. It’s not like we’re a year away from a superbowl. Deadskins are morons.

And it will take the Eagles #24, #37 and #55 to get up to #4 to get Berry!

If you draft a player that is going to be playing a position for the next 8-10 years….you don’t need depth at that position.

ie. Brian Dawkins – the Eagles never even had to think of safety because he was back there holding it down.

as far as depth in other places….i agree we need CB depth. But we just got two LB’s in trades and we got a DE in a trade. So I don’t know how much more depth we can handle. Having Cole, Tapp, Abirimiri, Bunkley, Patterson, Parker and Laws on the DL is pretty solid. I’m not sure a rookie outside of the top 15 will be a guy that can step in right away. We aren’t getting a 1st round LB, so that leaves DB. And there are plenty of options at CB in this draft.

I don’t agree Eaglesbeliever. I understand what you’re saying but that’s just not how I would do it. Especially for a defense. You need as many top picks as you can for defense. It would be different if you were trading down to get the best QB in the draft. But for defense I’d rather fill as many gaps as I can than mortgaging everything on one player and still have bigger holes than you would if you would have just kept most of your picks. But that’s just me. I feel you though.

i’m no scout, so i’m relying on others’ opinions of berry… but if he’s as good as they say he is, then i wouldn’t be mad at this at all.. they’re talking next ed reed.. that dude changed games single-handedly.. i’ll take that

It would be foolish if the eagles package so many picks to move up and grab one player just because there are so many holes they need to fill from Safety to Cornerback Offensive Lineman and quarterback. Eric Berry is a awesome college player but can he excel in the NFL we dont know yet thats why they are called projections. If they do move up to grab Berry that would mean having to give him a maximum contract which the birds do not want to do. Stay at 24 or move up to around 12-15 and get your safety either Earl or Mays.
